Trendy Clothing Shop Made Out of a Shipping Container - Mobile Boutique Store
In this video, we will be interviewing two of our quirkiest customers who designed a sea can into a clothing store boutique using a shipping container that they bought from us!
We helped them with container selection, engineering and permits, and even introduced them to our CSM and strut channel system. Aside from that, these two ladies modified this pop up shop exactly the way they wanted it. Karen and Rhonda opened their SHECan Boutique in the summer of 2019 and have been open every summer since in Wakaw, Saskatchewan.
They sell a variety of clothes and accessories in their start-up retail store business.
Watch this video to find out more about why they chose a sea container for their clothing shop, how they picked out and set up the shipping container, and find out how they are doing three years after opening their shop! Hope you learn something!

From Sea Can to Chic Boutique: Inside the She-Can Shipping Container Store
In this feature, Channing McCorriston, The Container Guy, visits Rhonda McConnell and Karen Langston, co-owners of She-Can Boutique — a fashion store operating out of a modified 40-foot shipping container.
What started as a casual conversation over wine turned into a thriving retail space that has been operating successfully for more than three years.
The Idea Behind She-Can Boutique
Rhonda and Karen, both retired from SaskTel, shared a passion for fashion and a desire to bring something unique to their community.
They envisioned a quaint boutique experience similar to shops found in nearby towns, but with a distinctive twist. Rather than leasing a traditional storefront, they explored a more affordable and creative option: a shipping container.
At the time, they had little familiarity with container-based retail spaces. With guidance and engineering support, the concept quickly evolved into a viable plan.
Why a Shipping Container?
As startup entrepreneurs, cost and practicality mattered.
A 40-foot container offered:
-
Affordability compared to traditional construction
-
Structural durability
-
Flexibility in layout
-
Distinctive visual appeal
The container they selected featured four doors, adding both functionality and street presence. The multiple openings created flexibility in layout and enhanced the boutique’s curb appeal.
Engineering and Customization
Transforming a steel shipping container into an inviting retail environment required thoughtful planning.
The modifications preserved the structural integrity of the container, with only a single penetration made for electrical power. From there, the interior was customized to reflect the boutique’s aesthetic.
Key features include:
-
Modular slot wall systems for clothing display
-
Chandeliers for ambiance
-
A glass storefront for visibility
-
Red awnings and an outdoor deck to create an inviting entry
Opening the boutique each day involves setting up the awnings and doors, a process that now takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes after years of refinement.
Creating a Unique Shopping Experience
She-Can Boutique quickly became a local attraction.
Customers are intrigued by the idea of shopping inside a shipping container. The exterior design draws attention, while the interior feels warm, stylish, and thoughtfully arranged.
The boutique offers a variety of fashion styles, aiming to appeal to different tastes while maintaining a cohesive, curated feel.
Many visitors appreciate the innovative design, and some even bring their spouses to explore how the container was modified.
Continued Growth and Expansion
The relationship with The Container Guy did not end after the initial build.
Rhonda and Karen have since expanded their container usage, adding:
-
A smaller 8x8 container for additional storage
-
A 20-foot container delivered for cottage storage
Their experience has turned them into strong advocates for container-based solutions, referring others who are interested in similar projects.
Why This Model Works
The success of She-Can Boutique highlights several important takeaways:
-
Shipping containers can serve as affordable retail spaces
-
Creative design significantly enhances customer appeal
-
Preserving structural integrity ensures long-term durability
-
Modular interiors allow flexibility as business needs evolve
-
Community-focused retail thrives on uniqueness
The boutique demonstrates how unconventional thinking can lead to sustainable business success in smaller communities.
Final Thoughts
She-Can Boutique is more than a retail store. It is a case study in entrepreneurial creativity and adaptive reuse.
By combining passion, thoughtful engineering, and distinctive design, Rhonda and Karen transformed a simple sea can into a thriving boutique that continues to draw customers and inspire new ideas.
It proves that with the right vision, even a shipping container can become a stylish and successful storefront.
