Propane Storage in Shipping Containers: Ventilation, Lighting and Safety Features
Shipping containers can be useful for hazardous material storage, but proper ventilation is critical when storing propane, gasoline or other flammable products.
In this project, Channing walks through a highly modified non-insulated shipping container designed for propane storage. The build includes multiple ventilation systems, natural lighting, explosion-proof electrical, a man door and modular interior framing to help create a safer and more functional storage space.
Why Ventilation Matters for Propane Storage
Poorly ventilated shipping containers can become dangerous when flammable vapours accumulate inside.
If a fire occurs and pressure builds inside a sealed container, the heavy cargo doors can become a serious hazard.
That is why this build includes ventilation at multiple heights throughout the container. Depending on the gas being stored, vapours may collect either high or low, so having openings in several locations helps promote continuous airflow.
BigAir® 45 and BigAir® 60 Vents
Container Modification World BigAir® 60 Vents were installed throughout the container to provide large amounts of passive ventilation.
The BigAir® 60 is approximately 17 1/2 inches tall and can be equipped with a bug screen to keep insects from entering while still allowing air to move freely.
BigAir® 45 Vents were also used higher in the container. At approximately 14 inches tall, the BigAir® 45 is smaller but remains one of the most common ventilation products used in shipping container modifications.
Container Modification World also offers the smaller BigAir® 30 for applications where a reduced opening size is preferred.
Adding Natural Light With Skylight Vents
Container Modification World BigAir® Skylight Vents were installed in the roof to provide both natural light and additional ventilation.
When direct sunlight hits the skylight, it can illuminate the interior surprisingly well, which is especially useful toward the back of a 40-foot shipping container.
Because any roof penetration creates a potential leak point, the sealant around skylight vents should be inspected periodically as part of regular container maintenance.
Window Framing Kits
Two Container Modification World Window Framing Kits were also installed.
The 42-inch windows can be opened to provide even more airflow when needed while also increasing natural light inside the container.
Combined with the skylights and explosion-proof lighting, the finished unit has multiple independent lighting sources.
Modular Strut Framing
The interior uses Container Modification World MSS 1-Way Brackets to support strut channel across the ceiling.
MSS 1-Way and 2-Way Brackets allow builders to install strut channel in multiple directions without welding directly to the container shell.
Additional vertical strut could also be installed to support Heavy-Duty Shelving for propane cylinders or other equipment.
This creates a modular interior that can be adapted as the customer's storage requirements change.
Adding a Dual Swinger Man Door
Everyday access is provided through a Container Modification World 36-Inch Dual Swinger Man Door with a half-glass window.
The glass adds another source of natural light while providing easier access than relying on the original cargo doors throughout the day.
Designing a Better Hazmat Storage Container
The final build combines Big Air 60 Vents, Big Air 45 Vents, Skylight Vents, Window Framing Kits, MSS 1-Way Brackets, and a 36-Inch Dual Swinger Man Door.
Rubberized flooring is also planned to create a more durable finished surface inside.
For propane or other hazardous material storage, the most important takeaway is that a shipping container should never simply be treated as a sealed steel box. Proper ventilation, access, lighting, and storage planning all need to be considered to create a safer and more functional hazmat container.
