Installing a Dual-Swinger Man Door in a Shed or Shipping Container
A good man door does not have to be limited to shipping containers.
In this video, Channing installs a Container Modification World 36-Inch Dual-Swinger Man Door in a backyard shed and shows why the same system can work on any building with a flat mounting surface.
The door can come preassembled, can be configured for either swing direction and can even be paired with a pet door for an insulated backyard shed.
Why the Dual-Swinger Door Is So Versatile
The Dual-Swinger Man Door is designed so it can be installed as either a left-hand or right-hand swing.
If the latch and hinges are on one side, the door swings one direction. Rotate the assembly, and it can swing the opposite way.
That makes the same door kit useful for multiple layouts without needing completely different products.
For this shed installation, the exterior trim created a flat surface that worked similarly to the corrugated mounting plane on a shipping container.
Installing the Door Frame
The first step is to hold the door frame in place and make sure the gap around the opening is even.
Because the shed will be insulated, enough room was left between the wood framing and the door frame to allow insulation to be installed later.
The frame was then aligned visually with the exterior trim before being fastened into place.
For this type of smooth-wall installation, the standard Rain Drip used on corrugated shipping containers was not necessary because the door sits directly below the roof overhang.
Setting the Hinges and Door Slab
The hinges have a preferred top and bottom orientation to help prevent water or ice from collecting inside them.
If necessary, the hinges can be rotated depending on the chosen swing direction.
Because steel door slabs can be heavy, an extra set of hands is helpful during installation.

Sealing the Door Properly
One important installation step is applying sealant behind the exterior flange before fastening the frame.
Doing this first creates a cleaner finished seal than applying a large bead around the outside afterward.
Once the door is installed, check that it opens smoothly, locks properly and has even gaps around the frame.
Adding a Pet Door
This shed was also fitted with a small pet door so the space could be used as a warm shelter for farm cats during the winter.
The pet door installs directly through the door slab and includes interior and exterior trim pieces to finish the opening.
A removable cover can also be used when access is not needed.
This creates a simple way to combine a secure insulated shed entrance with dedicated access for pets.
