Building a Secure Shipping Container Office With Heavy-Duty Shelving

A shipping container can be much more than a basic storage box. With the right insulation, framing, and interior system, it can become a secure office, tool crib, prepper storage space, or portable warehouse.

In this project, The Container Guy builds out a 40-foot container using a new strut framing method, insulated flooring, a secure interior office, and three levels of heavy-duty shelving. The video also includes downloadable 2D plans to help DIY builders follow the process.


Insulating the Shipping Container Floor

The build starts with two inches of rigid foam installed over the original container floor.

The foam is cut to fit across the width of the container, and the seams are taped before the first plywood layer is installed.

One lesson learned was to use tongue-and-groove plywood for the first subfloor layer. Regular plywood created some uneven joints between sheets.

A second subfloor layer was then installed with staggered seams to create a stronger and smoother floor assembly.


Finishing the Floor Before Framing

Before the walls were framed, the first coat of epoxy flooring was applied.

This allows the finished floor to extend underneath the future wall system and reduces the amount of detailed cutting required later.

One important lesson was to make sure any seam fillers or sealants are compatible with the epoxy coating. In this project, one sealant caused sections of the coating to flake.


A New Strut Framing Method

The walls use a new Container Modification World strut framing concept with an upper and lower track.

The tracks contain laser-referenced locations for the vertical strut channels, helping keep everything straight and parallel.

Once closed-cell spray foam is installed behind the framing, the strut system becomes tied into the shipping container shell.

The biggest benefit is modularity. Electrical conduit, plumbing, mechanical equipment, shelving, and other accessories can all mount directly to the strut channel.


Adding a Secure Interior Office

A steel stud partition wall separates the office from the main storage area.

Instead of adding windows or a man door directly through the container shell, the office is located behind the original cargo doors.

When the doors are closed, there is little indication from outside that there is an office or storage system inside.

The partition wall transitions from steel studs into the strut framing while maintaining the same interior wall plane.


Insulating the Container Doors

Container Modification World Door Flashing Kits are installed around the original cargo doors.

The kits provide a finished perimeter for insulating the doors while still allowing them to open and close normally.

Combined with the insulated walls, ceiling, and floor, this helps reduce the amount of heat lost through the cargo-door end of the container.


Heavy-Duty Modular Shelving

The strut-lined interior provides mounting points for multiple levels of heavy-duty shelving.

Three courses of shelving can turn the container into a portable warehouse or tool crib.

Because the system is modular, the same container can also be configured with lower benches for a change room or seating for an emergency shelter.

Shelving brackets can be aligned using a laser before installation, making it easier to keep multiple rows level throughout the 40-foot container.


Multiple Uses for the Same Container

The same basic structure can be adapted for several commercial and industrial applications.

It could function as a secure tool crib, portable inventory warehouse, employee change room or emergency shelter.

A warehouse attendant could even work from the front office while controlling access to tools, safety equipment and consumables stored on the shelving behind them.

With insulated floors, closed-cell spray foam, PVC wall panels and a modular strut interior, the finished shipping container becomes a highly adaptable workspace instead of simply a steel storage box.
