How to Insulate and Finish Shipping Container Doors With Flashing Kits

Insulating shipping container doors can be one of the trickiest parts of a container modification. You want to add enough insulation to control condensation and temperature, but you also want the original cargo doors to remain fully operational.

In this video, Channing walks through the updated Container Modification World Door Flashing Kit and Wall Flashing Kit, both redesigned to be easier for DIY installation, easier to ship and better integrated with the rest of the CMW framing system.


A More DIY-Friendly Door Flashing Kit

The Container Door Flashing Kit was previously shipped in sections up to 9 or 10 feet long, which made worldwide shipping expensive.

The new version breaks the kit into smaller sections that fit inside a roughly 4-foot box.

That change also made the system easier to install.

The flashing can now be partially assembled on the floor before being pressed into place on the container door. Built-in return tabs help define the correct position and reduce the amount of measuring and guesswork required during installation.


Keeping Shipping Container Doors Operational

The Door Flashing Kit is designed to create enough space for approximately two inches of insulation on the original shipping container doors.

Container Modification World recommends closed-cell spray foam for this application.

Once the foam is installed, plywood or PVC wall panels can be fitted behind the flashing and the trim components can be reinstalled.

This creates a clean finished edge while still allowing the original cargo doors to open and close normally.

The system also helps create a more complete vapour barrier around one of the most difficult areas of an insulated shipping container.


Using Pre-Laser-Cut Installation Holes

The redesigned flashing includes laser-cut holes in locations that fasten into hollow structural sections of the shipping container.

This avoids drilling unnecessary holes through the exterior shell.

Once the flashing is positioned, the installer simply drills through the reference holes and secures the frame with rivets or appropriate fasteners.

This follows the same general design philosophy used in Container Modification World's Steel Stud Brackets.


Installing the Wall Flashing Kit

The Wall Flashing Kit finishes the area beside the shipping container doors and helps define the interior wall plane.

Older versions required installers to drill at awkward angles around the corner post, which could make installation difficult and lead to broken drill bits.

The new design uses additional smaller components that allow installers to drill straight into the hollow corner post.

A built-in notch helps position the flashing correctly against the corner casting.

Because shipping containers can vary slightly between manufacturers, some trimming may still be required to achieve the perfect fit.


Designed as a Complete Framing System

The Door Flashing Kit and Wall Flashing Kit are designed to work alongside other Container Modification World products.

They pair with the Wood Stud Brackets and Steel Stud Brackets so the wall, ceiling and door framing all line up on consistent interior planes.

This makes it easier to install insulation and interior wall coverings without having to custom-build complicated trim around the cargo doors.
