Can You Safely Bury a Shipping Container? DIY Bunker Design Explained

Burying a shipping container might sound simple, but it can become dangerous very quickly if the structure is not reinforced and waterproofed correctly.

In this video, Channing works with Ron from Atlas Survival Shelters to explore what it would actually take to bury a shipping container into the side of a hill and turn it into an off-grid bunker or shelter. The biggest concerns are lateral soil pressure, groundwater, corrosion, and the fact that standard shipping container walls are not designed to hold back earth.


Why You Cannot Just Bury a Shipping Container

Shipping containers are extremely strong when loads transfer through their corner posts, but the corrugated sidewalls are relatively thin.

Once earth is pushed against those walls, especially wet soil, the pressure can become significant.

That means an underground container needs both interior and exterior reinforcement. The goal is to create redundant systems so that if one structural layer fails, the second still provides protection.


Exterior Studding Brackets and Structural Reinforcement

Container Modification World Exterior Stud Brackets can be used to create an exterior framing system around the shipping container.

These brackets provide mounting points for dimensional lumber and can create an exoskeleton around the steel shell.

Plywood can then tie the framing together, similar to sheathing on a traditional building.

A moisture-resistant composite exterior board can also be installed over the framing to help protect the assembly from mould, mildew, and moisture.


Waterproofing Is Critical

Water is one of the biggest threats to any underground shelter.

Before backfilling, the container needs a complete waterproofing system to protect the steel from corrosion.

The concept shown in the video includes bitumen coating, exterior closed-cell spray foam and drainage around the structure.

The spray foam can wrap underneath the container and around the lower channels to help create a continuous insulated envelope.


Managing Groundwater With Drainage

A layer of engineered rock is installed beneath and around the container.

This creates drainage space and functions similarly to a French drain system.

Container Modification World Container Pads can also be installed beneath the corner castings to keep the container slightly elevated and allow airflow and drainage underneath.

Weeping tile can then collect groundwater and direct it toward a sump pit or downhill outlet.

A sump pump may be required in locations where gravity drainage is not possible.


Concrete and Floor Options

One option is to remove the original wood floor and replace it with concrete.

Another possibility is to place engineered gravel beneath the floor and reinstall the plywood afterward.

Concrete can also be added around exterior framing cavities to increase structural strength and create additional thermal mass.

The correct solution depends heavily on site conditions, engineering requirements and how deeply the container will be buried.


Insulating the Container Doors

These allow the doors to be spray foam insulated and finished with plywood while remaining operational.

This can help create a more stable interior temperature, which is especially useful if the finished space will be used as a shelter, cellar or climate-controlled storage room.


Ventilation and Security

Even an underground container needs ventilation.

A Safer Way to Build a Shipping Container Bunker

The key takeaway is that a shipping container should never simply be buried and covered with dirt.

Any underground container project should be designed with structural engineering, waterproofing, drainage and local regulations in mind.

With the right system, a shipping container may provide a lower-cost starting point for an underground shelter, but the surrounding structure is just as important as the container itself.
