Building an Off-Grid Shipping Container Ice Fishing Shack on a Budget
Follow along as Channing transforms a lightweight 12-foot shipping container into a custom off-grid ice fishing shack.
The project started with a container purchased at auction that turned out to be much lighter and flimsier than expected. Instead of scrapping it, the team decided to turn it into something useful, keeping the build relatively simple and budget-friendly so a DIYer could take on a similar project.
Repairing and Reinforcing the Shipping Container
The existing paint was peeling badly, so the entire container was wire-wheeled, and any exposed steel was coated with zinc primer.
Because the original cargo doors were made from very thin steel, a standard Container Modification World Door Flashing Kit could not be used. Instead, a partition wall was built approximately 15 inches inside the doors, creating a separate storage area for tools, an auger, and other ice fishing equipment.
The floor was upgraded with rigid foam insulation and a new subfloor, while scrap steel was added to reinforce the sagging roof.
Steel stud framing was then installed throughout the interior before the entire container was insulated with two-pound closed-cell spray foam.
Adding a Residential Shipping Container Window
A prototype Container Modification World 20 x 60 Residential Window Framing Kit was installed horizontally as a lookout window.
The same framing kit can be installed vertically, giving builders more flexibility when designing shipping container homes, cabins or recreational buildings.
The window brings natural light into the shack and provides a clear view outside for checking tip-ups and monitoring conditions on the lake.
Building a Warm Interior
The inside was finished with painted plywood and custom wooden benches, shelving, and trim.
A wood stove was added for heat, with the stovepipe passing through a custom wall thimble. A Container Modification World Big Air Blank Vent was used as part of the wall penetration, and Shelving Brackets helped support the stovepipe assembly.
Checker plate flooring was installed beneath the stove to help protect the floor from heat, embers, and ash.
The finished interior has seating for approximately eight people, fishing holes for four anglers, storage beneath the benches, and plenty of overhead storage.
Adding Off-Grid Solar Power
Because the ice shack needs to operate completely off-grid, two solar panels were installed on the roof using Container Modification World Solar Panel Mounting Kits.
The panels produce approximately 1,000 watts and charge a portable battery system that powers the lights, television, soundbar, and other electronics inside.
During testing, even with everything running, the battery still showed approximately 16 hours of available power.
Exterior Storage With Strut Channel
Container Modification World's Strut Framing System was also installed vertically along the exterior end wall.
Pipe Racks were attached to the strut and repurposed as firewood storage for the wood stove.
This creates a modular mounting surface that can be changed or expanded later as the ice shack evolves.
Turning a Container Into a Mobile Ice Shack
ISO corner castings were added underneath the container to provide additional ground clearance.
Custom skis were then fabricated from 8-inch flat bar and connected using Deck Mount Twist Locks. This allows the entire container to be removed from the skis if necessary.
Tow hooks and ski loops were also added so the shack can be pulled across the ice using a side-by-side.
The finished ice shack weighs approximately 3,900 pounds and combines spray foam insulation, solar power, a wood stove, modular storage, and Container Modification World products into a practical off-grid winter shelter.
What started as an unwanted auction container became a comfortable, mobile ice fishing shack built for Saskatchewan winters.
